‘From the bonny bells of heather
They brewed a drink long-syne,
Was sweeter far than honey,
Was stronger far than wine.’
These are the first lines of the ballad ‘Heather Ale’ by Robert Louis Stevenson which tells the legend about the strong and brave Picts who lived in heather fields and kept the rare recipe of ale brewed from flowers of heather. This modest elegant plant always was one of the most favorite and popular and even ornamented the emblem of one of the clans in ancient Scotland.

According to the legend once upon a time there was a Scottish princess whose husband’s been waging a war. The only thing the poor lady had from her beloved was the white silk scarf and the memories of the days of happiness. She’d cried out all her tears, and the last tear-drop fell on the bright-purple flower of heather. At that moment it changed its color, and the flower became as white as the scarf of the princess’ husband. Soon after that day her beloved has returned home. And since then the white heather became a symbol of luck and fulfilled wishes.
The heather was called ‘the herb of immortality’, for people believed that it gives good health and can extend one’s life.
