Celtic patterns. The Celtic cross

In our previous post about four-leaf clover we’ve touched the subject of Christianity in Ireland. And now we’ll tell you more about another more common symbol of Christianity and one of the most popular symbols – about the Celtic cross.

The cross by itself is a popular symbol which is found in many cultures. The Celtic cross appeared in Ireland before VIII century and was found in the fields of Ireland, Scotland and Wales; its difference is a circle around the crossing. Some legends say that the Celtic cross was introduced by Saint Patrick who combined the symbol of Christianity and the ancient pagan symbol – the sun.  Though such a cross wasn’t alien for Celts, for it reflected their perception of the world, because there were no opposites excluding each other for them. There can’t be only black and white, there is not only good or evil, but there’re both of them. The Celtic cross reflects the possibility of creating harmony in the place of union different powers. And every combination and crossing is the source of vital forces, power which can give birth and rebirth.
